An American privately held company that specializes in the meat processing service that provides food service industries and also retail businesses with processed meat is headquartered in Aurora, Illinois.
A German immigrant in 1909 opened a meat market in Illinois by the name of Otto Kolschowsky. He opened this shop up after only being in the United States for just 2 years. Expanding into the world of wholesale, in 1917, he relocated his entire business to the nearby city of Maywood. This Chicago suburb became a staple point in the business that would be called Otto and Sons. Over the course of several decades and many years later, the reputation for Otto and Sons was that of a business offering nothing but quality meats.
An up and coming start up in 1955, McDonalds had opened the first of many fast food restaurants in Des Plaines, Illinois. To provide them with the ground beef patties, they selected Otto and Sons to be the provider of their meats. The founder and CEO for McDonalds, Ray Kroc and Otto settled the relationship through the use of the formal handshake. Over the course of many years, Ray and Otto would become life long pals.
In the late 1960’s, the presence of cryogenic food processing emerged. The method of using nitrogen to freeze the meat products is how McDonalds would get their products. Upon the nitrogen method being used, McDonalds was able to cut back on the number of providers they would need and therefore only needed 4 meat suppliers when going forward. The relationship between Ray and Otto would prove that Otto offered quality meats as he was chosen as 1 of the 4 meat suppliers for McDonalds.
It was in 1975 that Otto and Sons became OSI Group. As McDonalds continued to grow, the need for the meat also grew. Soon after they would need OSI to provide meats globally. Since this time, OSI has become the 13th biggest privately held company in America with an annual revenue of over 3 billion dollars. Soon after, OSI would expand into China and would become a leading provider of meat in China as well.
