Central California Surf Village: A Photo Essay

This is a picture essay. Recently I had a chance to wander a certain Central California Surfin' Village on a beautiful Winter day. Had some time to kill and decided to put the old digital camera to use. Here's some pix from my stroll. Click on any thumbnail to show the large pic in a separate window.

The road thru the village runs right by the ocean, and there are wonderful views of the coast right from your car. On this day the swell was almost nonexistent. On a typical day with a reasonable swell you would see lots and lots of surfers in this picture.

Passion for surfing in the village is so deep that a sculpture of Metal Man making the drop is placed right in the center of the village. Notice how he surfs with aloha!

In a place like this broken surfboards are common. But they aren't wasted in the village! Instead a local artist-patriot has used a few busted sticks to make a statement relevant for the times. Notice the bike rack too. It's a handy place to secure your wheels while you're in the water shredding.

On this day the lineup looked particularly messy. Very few were out enjoying the waves, but it was still a great day to hang on the cliff. Crisp weather made for long sight lines, and good picture contrast.

Between the rich folks homes that hang on the cliff, there's a path to one of the lineups in this surf-rich village. A trusting soul left his bike here while he gets some mid-day juice.

Even on a day with little swell, there's peaks and walls to be had at the village. Here's one in the mid-day sun that bekons to all who are on day land. Come out! Come out! Ride Meeeeee!

Makin' the drop on a sun-drenched wall o' water. Even with scanty swell there' s some overhead peaks for the hardcore village-dwelling surfer.

Whatta pose! Goofy foot goes backside on a nice right hand drop. Bowl's a comin' for this lucky surfer.

Cuttin' back to stay critical. Sillouette surfer in mid-day sun. Don't you just wish....

Small but picturesque...

California is really surf-central; there's so many ocean-side towns and villages from which to choose. All year round the waves are goin' off in one place or another. If you had a transporter (or a really fast car) and access to the web, you could ride waves 365 dayz a year. From San Diego to the Oregon border there's not a stretch of coast in the world that can compete with California. As the Beach Boyz sang so long ago, it's "Surfin' USA!" Get out, get wet, get stoked, get tubed, get a wave!
